- I cannot live without Sally Hansen’s leg makeup.
- Why it is important to protect yourself from sun damage.
- Sally Hansen’s leg makeup looks very natural
Just another miatlanta.com weblog
With skin cancer on the rise it is important to take care of yourself. Using sunscreen is important and not getting too much sun exposure is too. I love the sun and I tan really easily and quickly. I am getting older though and I realize that it ages you and those cute little freckles are not really freckles. I like that it also helps hide some blemishes and discolored areas without looking like make-up. They are age spots from sun damage. I like most young people didn’t take it that seriously until I started seeing the injure to my skin.
My husband got skin cancer last year and I have a friend that had melanoma. If she hadn’t gone to the doctor for a different suspicious mole she would have died. My husband’s mole that I made him go for, was not cancerous but a wart that came up totally unexpectedly was cancer. It is not something to mess with. With the ozone layer being damaged taking care of your skin is even more important.
Another thing that I love about Sally Hansen’s leg make up is I can spray a little on my arms and it looks very natural. Make sure you shave your legs, (I wouldn’t let my husband shave his! Ha) I spray it on over the bathtub so it doesn’t get on the floor or carpet, or over a towel. It will stay on for quite a while and doesn’t come off with perspiration.
I like to have moisturizer on under it because it has a tendency to dry your skin. I lightly smooth it out with my hands so it is not to heavy.
My husband would never admit it but he uses it on his legs too. You would never believe that it is not a natural tan. The biggest problem for me is finding where to mask it from him.

In light of the clear and present disaster presented by “fake and bake” tanning beds, many individuals have embarked upon a mission to uncover the best gloomy tanning option currently available on the market. This quest typically leads individuals to the two most popular options: Self Tanning Lotion or Spray Tanning. While both of these tanning alternatives are likely to relieve you achieve a sun kissed glow, it is essential to understand the differences of both options so that you can make the most informed decision possible when choosing a healthy alternative that is lawful for you.
Spray tanning is a grand safer and more natural way to achieve a bronze glow than that of a tanning bed. Spray tans are typically applied at a salon, and involve spraying color onto the top layer of your skin, in essence much like applying makeup to the skin. Spray tans do not produce a true tan, and because of this typically only last a couple of days. As such, they are difficult to utilize for events involving go of more than 24-48 hours, as they usually cannot be reapplied without going back into a salon. Spray tans can also be messy at times because the color will often come off on your clothing or bathroom towels.
Much like spray tanning, self tanning lotions are a much safer alternative to that of tanning beds. Self tanning lotions contain dihydroxyaceton, otherwise known as “DHA,” which when combined with the naturally occurring amino acids found in your body produces melanoidins on the top layer of your skin. Melanoidins are brownish in color, hence resulting in a “sunless tan.” Self tanning lotions have become extremely well-liked recently due to the vulgar cost and flexibility of application. For example, self tanning lotions are perfect for travel, typically last five (5) to ten (10) days, and can be applied in the comfort of your own home versus having to go to a salon for application. There are currently several popular self tanners and self tanning lotions on the market including the Adonia Bronzing Serum which is known for producing a very natural looking tan. The key to self-tanning lotions is in the application. Horror stories involving streaking and orange hands and knees are usually the result of self tanning lotions that have been incorrectly applied. It is imperative to follow all directions and above all else, consume patience when applying self tanning lotions, as the results will be well worth it. Both sunless tanning lotions and spray tans are excellent alternatives to the potential dangers associated with tanning beds. Which one you resolve comes down to personal preference but based on recent demand for self tanning lotions, the affordable prices and convenience of home application seem to be attracting a lot of attention from consumers.
Having a sunless tanning disaster? Don’t freak out. Whether the palms of your hands have turned a frightening shade of orange or your skin is streaky and blotchy, help is on the way. Take a deep breath and peer if you can make one of these easy, at-home tips work for you.
1. Exfoliate. First, moisturize the entire affected area. Then, soak in a warm bath for about 30 minutes. Finally, cleanse the self-tanner off your skin using a loofah and an exfoliating scrub. This procedure should lighten the sunless tanner significantly, if not remove it altogether. *Exfoliating is also a great fix if sunless tanner has darkened your elbows and knees.
2. For the palms of your hands or bottoms of your feet, exhaust facial hair bleach. Any body hair bleach will do, but bleach meant for the face will surely be the safest. Just apply the bleach onto your palms or soles and let it sit for ten minutes. Then, wash it off, gently scrubbing with a wash cloth. *Hair bleach also does wonders for self tanner under your nails, just apply with a q-tip for 10 minutes, then wash and scrub with a nail bristle.
3. Baking soda is a magic tool in sunless tanner removal. Soak your body in a warm bath to commence up pores. Then, scrub with baking soda and a wash cloth in the shower. If the self tanner has affected your face and neck, scrub the baking soda into damp skin in circular motions, then rinse off.
4. Lemon is another natural self tanner eraser. Best extinct on the face and neck, a fresh lemon wedge rubbed lightly but thoroughly will leave the affected area looking lighter and more radiant.
5. If you’re peaceful looking orange, try rubbing alcohol. Use caution, especially on your face and remember that alcohol may cause excessive dryness of the skin.
6. Another great trick is makeup remover. I have found that rubbing the affected area with eye makeup remover specifically, works best.
While these procedures may help to capture sunless tanner, it is important to remember that none of these tips tanner from your body completely. The good news is that self tanner only stays in the top layer of your skin, so it should come off naturally within a few days. While this process may be sped up with daily exfoliation, be kind to your skin and do not over-scrub.
There is plenty of research that shows that tanning can cause skin cancer, yet many people still pursue the dream of a rich, golden tan. Luckily, for those looking to achieve the bronzed glow, there are many products on the market that can assist to achieve the sun kissed look.
Applying lotions and sprays can be some what difficult and intimidating but with a little practice and by following the 5 self tanning tips highlighted here, you may well be on your device to the deep, dark tan you have always dreamed of with out the infamous effects of the sun. The self tan tips may help to prolong your self tan and also give the self tan a better glow.
A self tanner will typically last about a week depending on the type of self tanner being used and also the success of the prep time before the self tanner is applied. Self tanner sits on the top of the skin but skin is continually shedding so there is only a certain amount of time the self tanner will stay attached to the skin before it comes off.
Self Tanning Tip: Exfoliate
One of the most critical tips for a successful self tanning experience is taking time in the prep period which involves exfoliating. Since insensible skin cells shed off, you want to make sure you remove as many dead skin cells as possible before you apply the self tanner. Most drug stores and grocery stores sell some type of exfoliating wash or lotion, take a look at the labels and the product should state something about being an exfoliating product.
Self Tanning Tip: Dress Properly
A dark swim suit is the best item of clothing to wear while applying a self tanner, the item of clothing should be tight yet stretchable so that it does not get in the way as you are applying the self tanner but comfortable enough that you can still disappear around. If you feel comfortable, you could go in your birthday suit when applying the self tanner.
Self Tanning Tip: Start with Lotion
I personally like spray on tanning products better than self tanning lotions but I would recommend when first starting out with self tanning products to begin with a self tanning lotion. Self tanning lotions are a bit easier to control and navigate, once you obtain experience applying a self tanning product, then I would recommend trying a spray on tanner to see which method of application you prefer.
Self Tanning Tip: Wash the Palms
One of the downfalls of applying a self tanning product is the fact that the hands can actually turn orange because so remarkable self tanner soaks into the palms during the application process. There are a couple tips that can be offered to attend prevent orange colored palms: the first self tanning tip is to wash the hands with soap and water or some type of baby wipes every couple minutes during the application process. The other self tanning tip is to wear gloves such as medical personnel wear during the application process. If you do choose to wear gloves, form sure to not forget to self tan the hands, in which case you will need to wash your palms at the end of the application process.
Self Tanning Tip: Tricky Areas of the Body
Some of the most difficult parts of the body to get a nice race free glow are the feet, toes, ankles and the hands, fingers, wrists. Exfoliating should be done especially well in these areas of the body, a little less self tanner seems to work better on the tricky spots as compared to too much self tanner. I have also found that small circle motions really serve to rub the self tanner in well in these tricky parts of the body.
Following these 5 self tanning tips should really help with making the self tanning experience more successful and may even help to extend to golden glow a little bit longer.

Pale complexioned folks usually require a runt bit of time in the sunshine before they begin to get a burn, so remember to study the time, blondies! Avoid applying products like butter or baby oil to accelerate your tan. These can promote serious sun burns including blisters and even bleeding!
Best Suntan Products:
When you are considering suntan products, remember to use only products that are designed for tanning. Get products that block the UV sun rays while still allowing you to receive a tan. Another product that can really serve is a special hydrating lotion before and after a tanning session so that your skin won’t dry out from the sun. If you are getting rays at the beach, take along some sunscreen so that when your tanning time is up, you can spread it on for protection.
Sunless Tanning:
If you would like a great tan without the risk, simply choose a sunless tanning product. A good tip is to try is the spray on kind since there is less risk of uneven tanning in certain places like knees and ankles. Rub in an amount barely enough to cover the skin. Whether or not you need to work on your tan during the winter or if you’re paler and don’t like having to spend time and money on tanning beds, a lot of people have turned to the use of self tanners. Self-tanners have chemicals in them that affect the top layer of dead skin cells to darken their pigmentation. What this means is that when you exhaust a self tanner, the tan is not deep but rather is only on that surface layer on your skin. You can buy them in sprays, foams, moistened clothes or lotions. Although they can be very useful, self-tanners can be messy, leave you -or parts of your body- orange and leave streaks or blotches. Because you are obviously using a self-tanner to improve your appearance or to acquire it the way you like it, you want to make sure that you can avoid these tanning accidents or that you know how to fix them so that you can use a self tanner to get the look that you want. Below you’ll find some secrets and tips for avoiding the above tanning problems as well as some rapidly fixes, some of which are free.
Since we know that a self tanner affects the top layer of skin layers, we also know that anything else that we do to that top layer of skin is going to affect our self-tanner and the results. Before applying your first treatment of self-tanner, you should shower in order to remove any loose dead skin cells so that your tan will come out more evenly. Once out of the shower you should remember not to apply any types of lotions or oils. It is actually better in your interest to apply no products aside from the self tanner. Before apply the self tanner you need to obtain certain that you skin is completely dry. When using self-tanner on your face wait at least 45 minutes before applying any moisturizers or make-up. A lot of people recommend getting colored or instant tanners so that you can see where the tan is going on and how thickly but I recommend a gradual tanner.
You won’t be able to correct it instantly if there are any mistakes but it’s healthier for your skin, gives a more subtle appearance to your fake tan and the mistakes will be easier to correct. You should also make sure to wash off your hands and the top of you feet after applying your self tanner. The skin is soften and more absorbent here so not doing this is likely to turn them orange or effect them darker than the rest of your tan. It is also principal that you let your self tanning product completely dry before it comes into contact with anything. Essentially you should wait about a half an hour regardless of what the product tells you. If you don’t have that amount of time wait 10 minutes and then exercise a blow drier on low heat over your skin where the tanner is for a few minutes. If your skin comes into contact with things before it is dry you will get streaks and blotching in your tan.
So your tan has started to appear and it’s not picture perfect. If your palms or the top of your feet are orange or darker then the rest of your tan don’t worry. Since it is the top layer of skin that is affect you can either ex-foliate -scrub off some of the affected skin cells- or buy moistened clothes that are specifically for removing fake tans. You can find them anywhere that spurious tanners are found but I’ll warn you that they are usually a bit pricey. If you don’t mind having your palms or top of your feet orange or darker for a while, you can apply a high SPF tanning lotion or sunblock and it will lighten and tan out. The most popular problems with self tanners are the streaks and the blotches. Streaks are lines of darker skin and blotches are patches of darker skin.
There are quite a few options for these. If you just want it to blend more with the rest of your tan, you can rub lemon juice on the affected area paying special attention to the parts that meet the part of the tan you like. The acid in the lemon juice will help to lighten the darker area. You can also ex foliate the area to lighten it but you have to buy great care not to ex foliate too much or you’ll have blotches and streaks lighter than the rest of your tan. If you don’t mind your tan being darker than you can treat the rest of your tan instead of the blotches and streaks. If you want to do this than apply an extra layer of the self tanner to all of the unaffected parts of you skin to “fill in” the tan.
Hopefully, you’ll never experience a self tanning disaster and need to remove your self tanner. You can reduce the changes of this happening by careful preparation before applying your self tanning product. Be definite to exfoliate and moisturize thoroughly several days prior to application of self tanner and apply the product slowly and methodically to prevent streaking and an uneven application.
If you do experience streaking and need to remove self tanner, there are several ways you can do this. If you have small areas of streaking, the best way to remove these is to exfoliate thoroughly and repeatedly using a damp, nubby washcloth with a minute moisturizing or cleansing gel. You can also exercise an exfoliating pad or loofah brush, but this really isn’t necessary. I find the washcloth performs just as well in most situations. Exfoliate the streaked areas repeatedly over several sessions, and you’ll gradually start to see the streaked areas lighten and then gradually disappear. If you applied the self tanning product to your knees, elbows, and ankles, you may find the self tanner has darkened those areas excessively. Use the same method of repeated exfoliation to remove excess tanning product from these areas. You need to be a bit more aggressive with your exfoliation in these regions since they tend to have an excess of dead skin cells that grab onto the self tanner.
Another trick for removing self tanner is to utilize a bit of baking soda applied to a damp cloth. Sprinkle baking soda onto a moist cloth and gently exfoliate your entire body to remove excess skin cells that have grabbed onto the tanning product. This is also a good way to exfoliate before applying your tanning product for the first time. If this method doesn’t work for you, there’s a product on the market called Flavours Freedom Sunless Eraser that’s made specifically for correcting uneven self tanner applications. You should be able to find this product online via a Google search.
If you apply too powerful of your self tanning product to one area during application, you can usually prevent the area from darkening excessively, by firmly rubbing the place with a nubby towel. You can then reapply the self tanner being careful to use a light hand.
Once you’ve corrected your self tanning problems, be sure to start a regular exfoliation and moisturizing program to prevent the future need to remove a self tanner. You may also want to reevaluate the type of self tanner you’re using since certain brands have more of a tendency to streak than others. I’ve success with the Loreal line of sublime bronze self tanners in both the lotion and gelee form. These products tend to give a rather shadowy color which may not be suitable for everyone.
By exfoliating properly and choosing the most appropriate self tanner for your skin type, you can experience a beautiful, steak proof tan that’ll expose off that little red bikini you just bought!
